Main Sequence began his career in Europe, winning both his starts at age 2 to kick off a four-race win streak. He ran second in the Epsom Derby and placed in four other group stakes races as a 3- and 4-year-old before moving across the pond to the barn of Graham Motion.
With patient handling Main Sequence made his 5-year-old debut a winning one, capturing the Grade 1 United Nations Stakes at Monmouth Park in July 2014 and a spot in the Breeders' Cup Turf starting gate.
Main Sequence followed with victories in the Grade 1 Sword Dancer Stakes at Saratoga and the Grade 1 Turf Classic Invitational Stakes at Belmont Park.
With three Grade 1 wins in as many starts in the U.S., Main Sequence entered the Breeders' Cup Turf as the top stateside contender and he delivered. Main Sequence closed from off the pace to prevail and give trainer Graham Motion his third Breeders' Cup win.
Motion earned his first Breeders' Cup win 10 years beforehand in the Turf with Better Talk Now.
Main Sequence is a gelding by 2003 champion sprinter Aldebaran. He is the first foal out of the Group 3 stakes-placed Pivotal mare Ikat.
Main Sequence was named champion turf male and champion older male for 2014 following his unbeaten season.
In 2015, Main Sequence opened the seaon with a victory in the Grade 2 Mac Diarmida Stakes over familiar rival Twilight Eclipse.
