Unraced at two, Macho Macho quickly caught up with the 3-year-olds in his division  with a breakthrough victory over 2011 champion 2-year-old male Hansen in the $750,000 West Virginia Derby (G2). A gray or roan son of Macho Uno, Macho Macho was bred in Kentucky and sold for $160,000 at the 2010 Keeneland September yearling sale.

Macho Macho began his career in February 2012 at Fair Grounds with trainer Neil Howard and made stops at Churchill Downs in Kentucky and Monmouth Park in New Jersey before going to West Virginia. He was turned over to trainer Steve Asmussen after the Fair Grounds meet ended in March and rewarded his new trainer with his victory in the West Virginia Derby.
