Ahmed Zayat purchased Justin Phillip at the 2009 Keeneland September yearling sale for $400,000 and named him for his son. Sent to trainer Steve Asmussen, Justin Phillip finished second at Saratoga Race Course in his career debut and rebounded to win at Belmont Park his second start.

After winning an allowance race at Fair Grounds in his first start as a 3-year-old in 2011, Justin Phillip was promoted to stakes competition. He gained his first stakes victory when he won the 2011 Grade 2 Woody Stephens Stakes at Belmont Park.

Justin Phillip enjoyed a banner year in 2013. He earned his first career Grade 1 win in the Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap - his third victory of the year - and subsequently came up a neck short when second in the Grade 1 Vosburgh Stakes.

Justin Phillip is from the first crop of First Samurai, who finished third as the favorite in the 2005 Breeders’ Cup Grade 1 Juvenile Stakes. His paternal grandsire, Giant’s Causeway, was runner-up in the 2000 Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic after a dramatic stretch duel considered one of the best in Breeders’ Cup history.
