After a runaway win in his career debut in September 2012 at Del Mar, Goldencents finished second to eventual Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Shanghai Bobby in the Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park. He followed with a front-running victory in the $1 million Delta Downs Grade 3 Jackpot Stakes.
In 2013, Goldencents won his season debut in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes and a win in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby to secure himself a spot in the Kentucky Derby where he finished 17th. He went on to finish fifth in the Preakness Stakes before switching to the sprint division. In preparation for Breeders' Cup, he finished second in three graded stakes races including the Grade 1 Bing Crosby, Grade 2 Pat O'Brien, and Grade 1 Santa Anita Sprint Championship. He succeeded in the 2013 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile with a 2 3/4-length win but finished the year with a seventh -lace finish in the Cigar Mile.
Goldencents made his 4-year-old debut in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap, where he finished second to Palace Malice. A victory in the Grade 2 Pat O'Brien Stakes and a runner-up finish in a Grade 1 sprint set up Goldencents perfectly for a repeat bid in the 2014 Dirt Mile.
Goldencents set a testing pace in the 2014 Dirt Mile but he proved his determination in the stretch, holding off Tapiture to prevail for the second straight year.
Goldencents is a son of 2007 Grade 1 CashCall Futurity winner, Into Mischief, and is trained by Grade 1 Kentucky Derby winning trainer Doug O’Neill. The colt was purchased for $62,000 at the 2012 Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. 2-year-olds and horses of racing age sale.
