After winning the Wood Memorial Stakes by a neck from Alpha, Gemologist's five-race unbeaten streak to begin his career came to an end when he finished 16th in the Kentucky Derby.
An unbeaten two-year-old campaign put Gemologist on the list of leading candidates for the Triple Crown series.
The son of Hall of Famer Tiznow was purchased for $310,000 as a weanling in November 2009 at Keeneland. He was a front-running winner in his debut in a six-furlong race at Turfway Park on September 24, 2011, and picked up an allowance win on October 30 at Churchill Downs in his first venture around two turns. He showed even more maturity in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes on November 26 by stalking the early pace before cruising to the front and winning by 1¾ lengths.
Gemologist's dam, Crystal Shard, never raced, but she is a daughter of the great sire Mr. Prospector and comes from a strong female family that has produced many stakes winners. Tiznow is the only two-time winner of the Breeders' Cup Classic.
