Bred: Cherry Valley Farm (Ky.)

Sire: Ghostzapper

Dam: Gold Vault, by Arch

Contested could have easily been named “Uncontested” because after finishing second in her debut last September, she cruised home to four straight easy victories, including the Eight Belles Stakes (G3) at Churchill and Acorn Stakes (G1) at Belmont. Although her greatest success has come on the East Coast, this filly, sired by 2004 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Ghostzapper and owned by Jill Baffert, is based in Southern California with Jill’s Hall of Fame trainer husband, Bob. Contested faded to fifth after setting the early pace in the Mother Goose Stakes (G1) and could be best suited to one-turn races.

In the Eight Belles, Contested raced in substitute silks when the Bafferts forgot to bring their own.

“It was a nice win even though they didn’t have Jill’s colors on," Bob Baffert said after the race. "They gave her the option of choosing between some yellow and orange silks they had in the jock’s room and [prominent owner] Mike Pegram’s silks. So she said, ‘Give me Mike’s silks, they’re pretty lucky.' ”

Contested was bred in Kentucky by Claiborne Farm president Seth Hancock's breeding operation, Cherry Valley Farm. She sold for $110,000 at the 2010 Keeneland September yearling sale.
