Animal Kingdom made history in 2011 when he charged from off the pace to win the Kentucky Derby (G1) by 2 3/4 lengths in his first start on a dirt track. The Leroidesanimaux (Brz) colt followed with a game runner-up finish in the Preakness Stakes (G1) before an injury in the Belmont Stakes (G1) forced him to miss the rest of his three-year-old season. Animal Kingdom, who won the Spiral Stakes (G3) in his final prep for the Kentucky Derby, was named champion three-year-old male in 2011.
Trained by Graham Motion for owner Team Valor International, Animal Kingdom won his four-year-old debut before another injury forced him to the sidelines.
A homebred of Team Valor, Animal Kingdom pointed for the Breeders' Cup Mile for his return where he finished second to Horse of the Year Wise Dan after a troubled trip. The now 5-year-old horse again finished second to Point of Entry in the 2013 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap before flying to Dubai and becoming the first Kentucky Derby winner since Silver Charm to win the Dubai World Cup. Animal Kingdom is now looking to make his final start at Royal Ascot in mid-June before retiring to Australia for his first season at stud.
