Amazombie is the reigning Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner and champion male sprinter of 2011.
The gelding is being groomed by his co-owner and trainer Bill Spawr to defend that Breeders’ Cup victory in 2012 at his home racetrack, Santa Anita Park.
The 6-year-old by Northern Afleet’s sale story is interesting to say the least. Spawr was looking to buy another horse that was recuperating from a tibia fracture, and the farm’s manager also showed him Amazombie.
“I wasn’t at all interested in him,” Spawr said, “but he kept asking me what I’d give for the horse, so finally I told him $5,000. He was thinking ‘them’ and I was thinking ‘him’ just to end it. Well, he talked to the owner and he told him to take it.”
“Later on he said he was sending ‘them’ up to me and that’s when I found out that Amazombie was part of the deal.”
The super-consistent Amazombie, co-owned with Spawr by Thomas Sanford, appears to be a classic sprinter, best at 6 to 6 1/2 furlongs. After Amazombie finished second to Shackleford in the Churchill Downs Stakes (G2) at seven furlongs, trainer Spawr, happy as he was with the effort, acknowledged that he believes the gelding’s best distance is six furlongs, the Breeders’ Cup Sprint distance.
