Bred: Darley (Ky.)
Dam: Munnaya, by Nijinsky II
Darley stallion Bernardini - winner of the 2006 Preakness - is the sire of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rasid al Maktoum's homebred bay colt, who launched his career with a victory on the final weekend of the 2011 Saratoga race Course season. He finished second to Union Rags in the Grade 1 Champagne at Belmont.
Alpha was fractious in the gate of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and was in contention for a half-mile but slowed and finished 11th. He returned to competition on January 7 at Aqueduct and won the Count Fleet Stakes by 2½ lengths.
On February 4 at Aqueduct, he came from off the pace to win the Withers Stakes by 3¼ lengths before finishing second to Gemologist in the Wood Memorial Stakes in his final prep for the Kentucky Derby.
Alpha never threatened while finishing 12th in the Kentucky Derby, but after a short break he came back to prove he belonged among the elite 3-year-olds of 2012 with wins in the Jim Dandy Stakes and Travers Stakes, finishing in a dead heat with Golden Ticket in the latter.
Earning a fourth place finish in the Suburban Handicap, Alpha moved to Saratoga. A dissapointing sixth place finish in the Whitney Invitational Handicap was overseen when Alpha ran hard to win by a head in the Woodward Stakes.
